Here We Go Again – Recalled Dog Food – moldy grains

Written By: Dr. Jeannie Thomason - Feb• 28•13

“Feb 25 (Reuters) – High levels of a dangerous toxin found in bagged dog food on a grocery store shelf in Iowa have
highlighted the prevalence of a problematic mold in last year’s U.S. corn crop, as state and federal officials work on limiting the food safety concern. ”  Does this sound familiar?

It all started around 1995, mycotoxins, potentially deadly fungal toxins that multiply in moldy grains, were found in pet foods.  Tons of dog food  was recalled after dogs became ill and some died from eating it. The food was found to contain vomitoxin, a mycotoxin.  The recalls continued off and on through the years and in 2005,  tons more dog food was recalled due to aflatoxin contamination. And here we are in 2013.  Is anyone out there asking themselves “when will it end?”    The answer should be obvious by now - NEVER.  Are there any safe pet foods?  YES but it does not come in a bag or can, but you can find it local your grocery store or butchers.   A raw meat, bone and organ diet.

Moldy_ears_Figure_1diseasedchickencarrotsmoldyBefore you freak out and get sick to your stomach,  you don’t have to eat it but your dog was created and designed to eat it!   When raw feeding, what you see is what you get.  No worries about hidden ingredients, moldy grains, chemical preservatives or synthetic vitamins or fillers. All the mystery is taken out of your dog’s meals.

Dogs in the wild do not drag their caught deer or rabbit to a camp fire and cook it and they surely do not have little processed pellets that contain rendered vegetables, grains and euthanized animals, thus their systems are not made for digesting these ingredients.  Dogs are carnivores  with teeth and jaws for shredding meat and crushing bones and they lack any digestive enzymes in their saliva like an omnivore has.  The have highly acidic stomachs and very short intestines.  A raw diet is a direct evolution of what dogs ate long before they became our pets.

Want to know more about dogs being carnivores or how to feed a balanced and healthy raw diet to your dogs?

Toxic Heavy Metal Levels In Pet Foods

Written By: Dr. Jeannie Thomason - Feb• 22•13

kibble (Custom)In early 2011, Spectroscopy Magazine published the shocking results of labratory testing of pet foods for heavy metals.  The paper revealed  there were TOXIC levels of lead, mucury and even nuclear waste in many of the pet foods tested

The published scientific evidence that some commercial pets foods contain a lot more than the advertised choice cuts of meat and fresh vegetables.  Some pet foods contain toxic levels of arsenic, lead, mercury, and even nuclear waste.

Quoting the Paper Analysis of Toxic Trace Metals in Pet Foods Using Cryogenic Grinding and Quantitation by ICP-MS, Part 1? published in the January 2011 Spectroscopy Magazine…

“For this investigation 58 cat and dog foods were bought from local stores or donated by the authors and other pet owners. The samples consisted of 31 dry food and 27 wet food varieties. Of the 31 dry foods, 18 were dog food and 13 were cat food samples. The wet foods comprised 13 dog food and 14 cat food samples, representing pet food contained in cans and pouches.”

“Pet food prices ranged from the “bargain” store foods priced at $0.02/oz to gourmet or specialty foods purchased from pet suppliers priced at $0.42/oz. Three canned foods for human consumption were tested, including tuna fish, sardines, and chicken, which were sampled for comparison and control purposes.”

“The analysis of all the pet food samples showed that the highest concen¬trations of toxic elements were found in the dry foods of both cats and dogs. Out of the elements studied, dry food had the highest elemental content for 13 of the 15 elements examined. Dog food had the highest result for nine of the 15 toxic elements and cat food had the highest concentration for six of the 15 elements.”

“The dry dog food contained the highest concentrations of the following elements: beryllium, cad¬mium, cesium, antimony, thorium, thallium, uranium, and vanadium. The wet dog foods contained lower concentrations of the toxic elements studied than the dry dog foods.  The dry cat foods contained the highest results for five of the 15 elements including arsenic, cobalt, molybdenum, nickel, and lead.  The wet cat foods showed the overall lowest concentrations of the toxic elements studied than any of the other pet foods studied.”  (more…)

Responsible/Reputable Dog Breeders are the Solution – Not the Problem!

Written By: Dr. Jeannie Thomason - Feb• 21•13

responsible breederDog breeders are often vilified by Animal Rights zealots, by well-meaning but woefully misguided members of the public who have been persuaded that breeders are causing overpopulation and filling shelters,  by rescuers and shelter workers whose views of the world have become so  skewed by the war they are waging that they have lost all perspective, and by those in the media who prefer drama to truth.

Reputable, Responsible/Ethical Dog Breeders are the SOLUTION, not the problem!

They are the in reality, the true heroes stewarding the present and the future of dogs.  These breeders are the ones creating healthy, well-structured animals with great temperaments and excellent early socialization.  They are the ones funding health research and testing their breeding dogs while eliminating the dogs from their breeding program that are found to have structure, temperament or health problems.

Responsible breeders are the ones devoting their lives, time and resources to the betterment of their particular breed and the species as a whole. They are the ones who put in twenty hour days watching over the growing puppies, giving the dogs and puppies everything they need emotionally and physically.  They even sleep  with the new mom and puppies to make sure all is well for the first two or three weeks of their lives and then wake up three times during the night there after to check on them.

Responsible breeders are not only willing but eager to spend time with you, explaining, teaching and advising you about their breed.  They will make the disadvantages of owning their breed crystal clear, and it may even be the first topic of conversation!  No breed is perfect for everyone, and the responsible breeder wants to be absolutely sure that you really want, and are prepared to care for, this kind of dog for the life of the dog,  not just during the “cute puppy stage”.

A responsible breeder will refuse a sale, regardless of any  personal financial strain or the amount of work involved in raising the puppies… (more…)

Neutering Dogs: Effects on Joint Disorders and Cancers and MORE!

SpaySXNEUTERING DOGS: Effects on Joint Disorders, Cancers and MORE!

The big news lately has been studies on the  detrimental effects of spaying and neutering our dogs.   This is actually not anything new but I am so glad it is all coming to light.   You see,  spaying and neutering can be one of the most detrimental things we can do to the health of the dog (or cat…or even a person!)

I invite you to do some research on your own and come to your own conclusions on this very touchy subject, there is a lot out there on the net and here are just a few things for you to read and look into on the subject.

Veterinary studies done in 2005 (with mostly Rottweilers) showed that dogs that are spayed or neutered have a MUCH higher rate of bone cancer than un-spayed/un-neutered dogs or those spayed late in life. http://cebp.aacrjournals.org/cgi/content/full/11/11/1434

Veterinary oncologist Kevin Hahn  published an article in Veterinary Practice News entitled “Can We Neuter Cancer In Dogs?”  August 2005 (Vol 17 #8) p21. (8/14/05) lilibeth.   He opens the artilce by stating that, after reviewing studies reported over the last 30 years, he’s not sure what to recommend to his clients. Like most veterinarians, Dr Hahn mentions the higher incidence of testicular and mammary cancer in intact animals, but also notes that spayed females have a 4 times greater risk of cardiac hemangiosarcomas, and neutered males also show a significant increased risk for this cancer compared to intact ones.

Another cancer Dr Hahn discusses that deserves mention is prostate cancer because a lot of people erroneously believe that castration prevents this. In reality, it does not. In fact, castrated dogs have up to a 4 times greater risk of developing prostate cancer than intact animals. At the same time, spayed or neutered dogs have a 1.5 to 3 times greater chance of developing bladder cancer. Because of this, rectal examinations and abdominal palpation should always be part of a routine veterinary physical examination.

Now another study was recently released:
